Project Team 2007.11.09

Present: Grace Agnew, Isaiah Beard, Anne Ciliberti, Sujay Daniels, Chuck Hedrick, Jane Hutchison, Judy Jeng, George Laskaris, Sandie Miller, Sheri Prupis.

Rutgers is still waiting to hear about the Senior Program Analyst position. The job description is done, but we decided not to wait until 11/28 to move forward on advertising it.

The core server configuration was briefly discussed. George Laskaris will send out specifications for the Tech Implementers to look at before 11/28.

We discussed the domains of the questions for the Alpha Implementers:

  1. CMS - which one? How many students using it? How many faculty? What roles are assigned? When do you do add/drops?
  2. Network - what is your internal bandwidth capability? What firewalls internally are set up that might affect delivery of video on campus? Do you have a streaming server already and, if so what server and system are you using. What do you do for identity management, repository format, distribution and access on this server? How many personnel do you have to support it? Do you want to download to your local server vs. accessing video from NJEDge.Net?
  3. Video - What video do you want to upload? To access? Do you do classroom capture and, if so, how do you do it? Formats used? Level of Quality of Service expected - What level of support are they expecting from us? What personnel do you have to support video usage on campus? Do you have the ability to pull up flash video?
  4. Policies - What policies do you have on campus that might affect delivery and access of video?

What other questions do we need to ask? What other domains are not covered here?

There could be another domain of Identity Management, but it was discussed that getting at that information might be better handled through an independent survey given by the NJVid Tech group to the appropriate contacts at each campus. In fact, they wanted to get at this information from all constituents for other reasons besides NJVid. This will become a separate NJEDge.Net work group. Rutgers and NJEDge.Net will host a workshop on Identity Management. The Alpha Implementers will be invited to this. This information will be combined with the responses from the Alpha Implementers concerning the above in order to ascertain potential barriers and what the precise needs are.

It was discussed that if there was a high demand for local server download, additional programming to the WMS could then point to the two servers.

We talked briefly about policies that would also be needed at our end for NJEDge.Net. Certainly, these services are free to the Alpha Implementers during the grant, but not after that.

Chuck brought up the need to design expandability into the core server configuration. We discussed the fact that we're not trying to compete with Google or Yahoo. They don't make higher education commitments.

It was brought up that museums and public libraries are different and we may have to meet with them separately.

The last item of discussion centered on acquiring the Internet domain and what we should name it. We chose NJVid.edu as a domain name. Others were checked (.net, .org, .tv, and .com) and were cleared. We will use www as well as without.

Next meeting - Tech Discussion and Demonstration of WMS and Fedora at Rutgers University, Grace's area on Busch Campus in the Tech Services Building. Follow the directions to the Annex. Grace will send us the directions.
