Introductions

Attendees introduce themselves and explain what initially interested them in NJVid.

Explained in-depth in narrative grant proposal "NJVid: New Jersey Video Portal"

NJVid Conceptual and Storage Architecture

DISCUSSION

  • Access & authentication - would every institution go through the same A&A process or would it differ depending on local institution's local process. Differs according to local process, but would need some kind of standards and policies that work with Shibboleth.
  • Video specifications and standards - Quicktime and Flash. There was a question on what to do with current .wmv files at alpha implementers' locations. NJVid needs to work with certain input types, DVD-pro, avi, etc. and vhs can be converted. Further discussion required on this.
  • Role of commercial video like FMG - right now, FMG authenticates locally, but then goes to the FMG server in order to use their interface. Would this work with NJVid's interface? Or would it continue to go to the FMG server? What problems might this present?
  • Workflow Management System - very metadata oriented and could be complicated for simpler use. Is there a minimum entry level of metadata in order for this to work?

Survey Results, (survey of alpha implementers) - Grace Agnew

DISCUSSION

  • How are we going to avoid duplication of lectures on demand & podcasts locally?
  • Commercial video - consortium pricing, economy of scale
  • Consortium pricing - can it include K-12 members of NJEDge? K-12 would need to purchase through VALE or NJEDge the rights to that video. Or they could purchase on their own and simply store it through NJEDge.
  • Copyright concerns - who owns what, who can use what -- to be addressed by workgroup

Alpha implementers expectations - Sandie Miller

Partners in implementation of video portal and Shibboleth authentication process
  • 2-4 key faculty members / librarians use video portal and assess it - grow this by 50% each year
  • Also - market NJVid within alpha implementers organization
  • Measure of use for grant -- % of those using NJVid
  • 90% of Alpha Implementers satisfied with NJVid usage by end of grant

DISCUSSIONS:

  • $ -- Understanding ongoing costs
  • Primarily hardware and staff is covered by the grant
  • Grant relies on Use of volunteers
  • Sustainability - business plan to be established - to be addressed by workgroup

Equipment and staff - mostly paid for by grant. However, there are exceptions where the equipment or staff isn't covered by the grant (e.g. 16 mm film needs to be converted to digital prior to ingestion into NJVid.

Who will upload? Rutgers' staff -- $ for Rutgers students provided for by grant. Clarification of who is doing what part of the grant work for alpha implementers - not necessarily part of the Alpha Implementers workgroups, but aligned with it.

Timeline:

Locally Owned:

The question was raised as to what metatags would be needed, how will it be searched? Grace Agnew responded that we will have to pay attention to the end user experience to help determine this.
