Project Team 2008.04.11

Present: Isaiah Beard, Sujay Daniel, Robert Harris, Jane Hutchison, Chuck Hedrick, Judy Jeng, George Laskaris, Charles McMickle, Sandie Miller, Tom Nemeth

Update on Progress with Hiring Programmers:

NJEDge is having trouble finding qualified candidates. Of the applicant pool, only three are "remotely possible." Candidates are either unqualified or qualified only in other areas, and the job does not pay enough to attract directly qualified candidates - Proposal to subcontract to Rutgers in the meantime - Need to re-advertise the job - Monster.com and computer-oriented job sites - Need to post on listservs - Previous advertisement in NYTimes was expensive - Maybe some NJEDge employees hired for other projects can spend some time on this one - Posting for Systems Programmer also not good - Could use an applications programmer at NJEDge.

Discussion of Revised Timeline:

No major objections raised - Commons launch in Summer 08 might need to be pushed back to September as per Grace's revision - Is dependent upon technical progress and Locally-Owned workgroup's progress - Need to add footer to timeline document with author's initials, version and date - Need to convert it to PDF for Web site and preservation purposes - Need to convert PowerPoint presentations to Flash for Web site - Need to bold the launch of three NJVid collections.

Discussion of Benchmarks:

Isaiah expresses a desire for a document listing dependencies for each group to know what progress their work is dependent upon - All three collection workgroups need to inventory their initial offerings to NJVid - Commercially-Licensed Videos workgroup needs to cross-check their commercial licenses to avoid redundancies and wasting time - Question posed: Are Web servers included in NJVid budget? No, streaming servers were put in as a match, but Web servers were not included.

Plan for Advisory Board meeting April 28:

Technical survey questions will be assembled by Chuck who Sandie suggests should check with Grace to see if those questions match what she had in mind - hope to put them out next week in time for results to be discussed with Advisory Board - Call for participation in A&A listserv from higher ed - who's responsible for IDM for the institution? Poll from K-12 thru Matt Conforth

Adding Tom Minnefor and Ron Cote to Technical Team:

There are two different technical teams and many sub-divisions within them - Need to find out from Tom and Ron what they are interested in participating in and to what end

Question for Technical Survey Posed:

How many institutions will be able to run Shibboleth themselves, and how many will need other institutions' assistance? Need to find out more about public libraries and museums. Are they going to use authenticated material?

Workgroup Meetings Have Been Scheduled:

Five of nine groups have finalized meeting dates - a sixth group meeting announcement is imminent - Tom goes through the meeting times and dates:

  • Web workgroup - April 29, 2PM
  • Sustainability workgroup - May 13, 2PM
  • Locally-Owned Content Collections workgroup - April 17, 10AM
  • Intellectual Property & Copyright workgroup - April 24, 2PM
  • Commercially Licensed Video Collections workgroup - May 9, 10AM with VALE and vendors & 1PM
  • DV Production & Upload Training workgroup - likely imminent announcement for May 19, 3:30PM

Isaiah advises a proficient course of action is to meet in-person for the first workgroup meeting and then virtually using phone/Web thereafter

Updates to Web site:

Robert Harris has adjusted formatting, fixed spelling mistakes, added a listing of Project Team members under the "About" tab - Sujay has pointed all relevant NJVid domain names to NJVid site proper - Sandie adds http://www.njvid.org is the official site to use and publicize - need to add Chuck Hedrick and George Laskaris to list of Authentication & Authorization members on Web site - need to update calendar with all the workgroup meetings - Need either to change video on home page or make it start playing only when prompted to do so.

Boot Camp for Sujay to Learn Fedora:

Sujay can go to biweekly cyber-infrastructure meetings. Next one is 4/16 at 10am. After that 4/30?

Determining Metadata for WMS for each Collection - Who is Responsible?

Should include people from Rutgers for advice - Touch base with Rhonda Marker, Ron Jantz, Grace Agnew. Make clear what questions need to be answered and resolved. Use Rutgers metadata group - Relevant metadata topics can still be discussed in workgroups.

Update on Hardware Acquisitions:

George will contact Sun about the release of their new server - Is the June release date still likely? - Can we start working without Sun's product? In all practicality, yes, but we need Locally-Owned group to address critical issues first so that initial Commons collection is not haphazardly put together - Possibly could speak to folks at Penn State who went with something else. Grace can set this up.

Feedburner RSS Feed Added to Blog:

Should be easy to set up - Instructions on site to be clarified by Sujay.

Name Change from "Lectures on Demand" to "Learning on Demand":

"Lectures" is an antiquated word, but the other two collections also promise the potential of learning, so "Learning on Demand" is too broad - other names proposed: nobody likes "Lessons on Demand" - "Academics on Demand" receives some positive feedback - All agree to let name change percolate.

Other Business:

All official presentation documentation for NJVid need to include all four logos clearly visible and use the NJVid template

Advisory Board Agenda:

  • Discuss background of NJVid project
  • Present and discuss results of survey given to Alpha Implementers
  • Discuss background of "Authentication & Authorization" component
  • Need to present initial scenarios of use determined by Locally-Owned Content Collections workgroup
  • Present to Board our rules and expectations of them and inform them they can participate in workgroups
